AI Notes

Album page with two items: a small rectangular newspaper clipping pasted at the upper left, and a pale tan stamped envelope mounted below it. The clipping is headed ‘Marriage of Miss Walker To Mr. Corbell Announced’ and reports the October 9, 1937 marriage at Amelia, Va., of Emma Dee Walker (the compiler’s daughter) to Robert Lawrence Corbell Jr. of Portsmouth, Virginia. The envelope is addressed in fountain-pen ink to Mrs. J. Pickens Walker, c/o Mrs. Anna W. Modisette, Philippi, West Virginia, with a Richmond, Va. postmark dated AUG 9 / 11 AM / 1940 and a 3-cent purple Jefferson Presidential-series (‘Prexie’) stamp.

The sender is the compiler’s daughter “Dee” - Emma Dee Walker Corbell - writing from Richmond to her mother Amy, who was summering at Philippi, W.Va. with Anna Walker Modisette. Anna was J. P. Walker Sr.'s elder sister (Anna Strait Walker, b. May 1878 Clarksburg WV, m. Albert Modisette) - i.e., the compiler’s sister-in-law, not an unrelated acquaintance. The letter inside is preserved across the following pages (163 - 168).
