AI Notes

First page of a handwritten letter in graphite pencil on cream notepaper, dated only ‘Saturday—’ at the upper right. From internal evidence (the envelope on page 162 is postmarked Richmond, Aug. 9 1940) the letter was written the preceding week, ca. early August 1940. Salutation ‘Mother Dearest—’. The writer is Emma Dee Walker Corbell, the compiler’s daughter, who married Robert Lawrence Corbell Jr. in October 1937 and lived in Richmond, Va. ‘Mardy’ (mentioned in the opening sentence) appears to be a sibling or close family member. The text runs off the bottom with the start of a new sentence (‘It’) that continues on page 164.
