As Bishop Allison enters the Cathedral, trumpets sound, and this hymn is sung.

Old 100th Psalm Tune … arr. Vaughan Williams

[Musical notation labeled OLD HUNDREDTH and L. BOURGEOIS, 1551]

Congregation and Choir

  1. ALL people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him and rejoice.

  2. Know that the Lord is God indeed; Without our aid he did us make: We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take.

Choir and Trumpet

  1. O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his Name always, For it is seemly so to do.

Choir only

  1. For why? the Lord our God is good, His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.

WILLIAM KETHE, 1561; based on Psalm 100

Following an Interlude, Congregation and Choir

PRAISE God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

THOMAS KEN, 1709

The new Bishop petitions as follows

I, Christopher FitzSimons Allison, whom God has ordained to be a shepherd and servant, and who now have been chosen as Bishop of this Diocese, come to you, desiring to be recognized, and invested, and seated in the chair which is the symbol of that office.

The Presiding Bishop replies

Before I can accede to your petition, we must be assured by the appointed representative of the Diocese that you will be received as their duly elected Bishop.

The Warden then says

We are ready and willing to do so. As President of the Standing Committee, I certify that Christopher FitzSimons Allison was duly elected Bishop CoAdjutor of the Diocese of South Carolina by the clergy and people in Diocesan Convention assembled on the seventeenth day of May, 1980, and that consents to the election were received from a majority of the Bishops having jurisdiction and of the Standing Committees of the Dioceses. We therefore present to you the Right Reverend Christopher FitzSimons Allison to be invested as Twelfth Bishop of South Carolina.

The Presiding Bishop then says

Let the will of the people here present be made known. Do you recognize and receive Christopher FitzSimons as your Bishop?

People We do.

Presiding Bishop

Will you uphold Christopher FitzSimons in this ministry?

People We will.

The Presiding Bishop stands and calls the people to prayer.

Let us now offer our prayers for Christopher FitzSimons, for this Diocese, and for all God’s people.

All kneel for the Litany.
