…visit to Nacoochee Valley. Theodore gratified him by going with him in a buggy on Saturday. Mr & to the Funeral of [uncertain: R. G. R.B.] & a farm 10 miles hence. & Martha also went with them. On Monday he took Charles with him in the Buggy to Pickens C. H. 13 miles — but 26 miles is rather too much, & he is quite Stopped. When over-fatigued. He tells he feels the necessity of [illegible] resting himself every day at Noon that perhaps will make you understand better his strength. I make Grace boil Soft rice for his breakfast. At dinner, he always has very good & well boiled rice & Irish potatoes. Miss Wigfall is nearly well of the Scarlet fever. Kate & herself feel the privation, which My uncertainty about Kate’s having had the[m], has caused. It has been a very Mild case & no other is yet in the Hotel. Nellie is well & except a sore Mouth one Week. She has not had any headache, or I have not heard her complain of it. Last Sunday we went to the Methodist Church. A German preached in English. We wished his composition had been as good as his accent. We felt it had been only large words & no meaning to us. Even the Psalm Singing was un-Methodistical, & failed. I felt sorry for the disappointment to those who had come in from their farms, to receive from what they are accustomed to in worship. Tell the Boys there are nearly 2 doz. little boys & girls living in this house & sometimes we have “plenty of noise”
AI Notes
A handwritten page in blue/grey ink in a sloping cursive hand, with no visible letterhead, salutation, or date — clearly an interior page of a longer letter. The writer recounts a buggy outing, a funeral, household details about cooking and the children’s health, and a disappointing Sunday sermon by a German preacher at the Methodist church. Several spots and stains in the upper portion of the sheet. The page ends mid-sentence and continues onto the next scan.
