AI Notes
Album page with two overlapping newspaper clippings, both documenting the December 1937 / 1938-season debut of Mary Ann Walker. At left, a clipping from page ‘FOUR’ of the Savannah Morning News (per pencilled annotation at top) dated ‘Dec. 29th 1937’ — headlined ‘Colonial Dames House Is [Scene of] Lovely Reception For M[iss Walker]’ with two columns of receiving-line names and invited guests. At right, partially overlapping, a clipping from the (Jacksonville Florida) Union of Friday Dec. 23 carrying a full-length studio portrait headed ‘ATTRACTIVE DEBUTANTE 1938’. Both clippings are pasted with the bound edges and headers visible at the top; the right-hand strip of the Savannah column is mostly hidden under the Jacksonville clipping.
The accompanying body caption is hidden under the album mounting; the photograph is captioned in print as ‘Attractive Debutante 1938’ and is the formal portrait of Miss Mary Ann Walker for the 1938 Jacksonville debutante season, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pickens Walker.
The Savannah-clipping date is “Dec. 29th 1937”. The decorations are pink and white gladioli, the table centerpiece is pink carnations and white candles, Miss Walker’s dress is silver lame with green chiffon trim, her bouquet is violets, her mother’s dress is grey marquisette, and Miss Dee Walker also assisted, in a black velvet dress with gardenias and lilies-of-the-valley. The Mrs. Donald Allston identified as ‘Mrs. Walker’s sister’ confirms the compiler’s sister Mary Annie FitzSimons Allston (‘the younger Minnie’) married Donald Allston. Misses Amy and Aramintha Allston are her daughters / kin assisting at the reception.
