[The portraits are of the compiler’s husband’s maternal grandparents — James Pickens of West Virginia (1817–1887) and his wife Anne Maria Dever (1825–1899). Their daughter Emma Dee Pickens (b. 1856) married Samuel Walker, and her son James Pickens Walker married the compiler Amy FitzSimons.]
