Certified typewritten transcript, first page of the will of Ann Drayton Perry (widow of Edward Perry the Younger), of the City of Charleston. The page is numbered ‘788’ in pencil at upper right (matching the probate-volume page); the typescript carries the standard probate codes ‘18-D’ (superscript ‘S’) and ‘N-39.’ (superscript ‘O’). The handwritten note at the upper right reads: ‘Probate Court / Charleston S.C. / vol. 38, p. 788’ (not p. 188 as previously transcribed). The will opens with bequests of carriage, horses, and the enslaved Coachman Abraham, and contemplates the upcoming marriage of her son Edward Drayton Perry to Maria Ann Mauger. Pew No. 9 in the north Aisle of Saint Philips Church, Charleston, descends through Rebecca Drayton (the testator’s mother) to her son and grandchildren. The typescript continues onto pages 613, 614, and 608 in the album sequence. This will is the 1830 counterpart of the 1797 will of her husband Edward Perry the Younger on p. 609 — together they document one generation of the Perry/Drayton/Mauger line that produced Edward Drayton Perry, the Pee Dee rice planter whose intimate friend Judge Benjamin Faneuil Dunkin gave the compiler’s maternal grandfather his Christian names.
