AI Notes

Certified typescript copy of the will of Edward Perry the Younger of Saint Pauls Parish, S.C., executed 8 June 1797, proved 3 December 1800, recorded in Will Book D-1800-1807, page 57. The typescript is paginated ‘58’ in pencil at upper right (the probate-court page-number identifier — see pencil note ‘Probate Court / Charleston SC / vol. 28, p. 58’). Typewritten reference codes ‘14-B’ (with superscript ‘S’) and ‘N-25.’ (with superscript ‘O’) head the page — standard probate-office filing codes. The will gives Ann Perry the entire estate absolutely; confirms a December 1793 marriage settlement between testator, his father Edward Perry the Elder, and Rebecca Drayton; appoints Ann as Executrix and Edward Perry Senior and Tobias Bowles as Executors. Witnessed by Isaac Auld, John Mackey, and Rebecca Drayton. Proved before Charles Lining, Esq., O.C.T.D., 3 December 1800. Certified ‘A True Copy’ by Virginia L. McLeod, Clerk Probate Court, Charleston County, South Carolina (mid-20th-century certification, likely the same circa-1969 packet that produced p243 and p610).

Editorial note: this is the first known will in the Perry chain reconstructed across pp. 609, 612, 610, etc. Edward Perry the Younger here is the husband of Ann (Drayton) Perry whose own 1830 will appears on p. 612; their son Edward Drayton Perry is named in his mother’s will. The 1793 marriage settlement referenced is between testator, his father Edward Perry the Elder, and Rebecca Drayton (Ann’s mother) — confirming the Drayton match. The witness Isaac Auld is likely Dr. Isaac Auld (1770-1819), Lowcountry physician; Tobias Bowles was a Charleston attorney and executor familiar in St. Pauls Parish; Charles Lining (Ordinary, Charleston Town District) signed many probates of the period.
