Letter from W. A. Livingston, Orangeburg, S.C., congratulating Barrett and Allston on C&S Bank promotions, 9 March 1957

The same letter shown partly hidden behind a newspaper clipping on p576, here unfolded so the full body is visible. Typed in capitals on engraved blue letterhead ‘W. A. LIVINGSTON, INC. / WHOLESALE GROCERIES / ORANGEBURG, S.C.’ and dated ‘March, 9th, 57.’ The three-line congratulatory message is addressed to the two newly-promoted C&S Bank officers profiled in the adjacent clipping — Lawrence W. Barrett (named vice-president and trust officer) and Donald McKay Allston Jr. (named trust officer; the compiler’s nephew through her sister Mary Annie FitzSimons + Donald McKay Allston Sr.). Signed in blue ink with the same name as the typed signature line: W. A. Livingston (the flourish on the W is calligraphic but the signature matches the firm letterhead and the typed cue line directly above it). The paper bears horizontal folds where it was creased into the album.

the cursive signature reads W. A. Livingston (matching both the engraved letterhead and the typed cue line) — not “J. A. Livingston”. The opening flourish on the W is an ornate calligraphic loop, easily misread at low resolution but unambiguous on the high-resolution scan.
