back to New York and would manage to do ^so when she was there.

Well we have had a delightful change in the weather since I last wrote you. It has turned suddenly very cool in the past week and three times the thermometer has gone down to a low of 50°. They even had the heat on the first of these days.

AI Notes

Fourth sheet (numbered “(4)” in the upper-right corner) of the August 12, 1948 letter from John McCready FitzSimons (Hendersonville, N.C.) to his aunt Ellie (Ellen Milliken FitzSimons of Charleston). Same Barrovian Lodge stationery and pencil hand as pp. 517–519.

The page completes the Alexandria-stopover paragraph begun on p. 519 (“back to New York and would manage to do so when she was there”), with a caret-inserted “so” between “to do” and “when she was there” — preserved here. The writer then turns to a new paragraph on the weather: a delightful change since John last wrote, with the past week turning suddenly very cool — three times the thermometer has gone down to a low of 50°. They even had the heat on the first of these days. Text continues at “days” off the bottom of the sheet onto p. 521.

The writer inserted “so” interlinearly above “to do” (caret visible at top of scan); this is preserved in the transcription. The weather report is consistent with mid-August Western North Carolina (Hendersonville, elevation c. 2,200 ft.), where a 50° low after a hot spell is not uncommon and would prompt hotel heat.

The small “^so” indicates a caret-inserted word the writer placed above the line between “to do” and “when she was there.”
