Body, in dark ink, in a large hand:

This is to certify that on October 20th, 1908, at 8:30 p.m. I united Amy Perry FitzSimons and James Pickens Walker of Philippi, West Virginia, in marriage. — This marriage took place at the residence of the bride at [false start crossed out] Adams Run, South Carolina, while the undersigned was the Rector of Christ Church parish in that Diocese.

Thomas Perry Baker Jersey, Virginia

AI Notes

A single sheet of letterhead from Wood Grove Farm, Jersey, Virginia, used by the Rev. Thomas Perry Baker as a certification of the marriage of Amy Perry FitzSimons and James Pickens Walker. The hand is large and somewhat shaky, written in dark ink. The certification is dated October 20, 1908 in the body text (though written in 1940 — the accompanying covering letter on pages 388–390 is dated Sept. 10, 1940 and explains that Baker is supplying this certification because the church records of his ministry at Adams Run had been neglected; the envelope is on page 387). The signature appears at the lower right and the sheet shows fold creases. [confirmed ‘October 20th’ (superscript ‘th’); identified the struck-through correction before ‘Adams Run’ as a false start where the writer began ‘in Adams’ or similar and crossed it out. The compiler is now identified canonically as ‘Amy FitzSimons (Mrs. James Pickens Walker)’.]

The struck-through phrase before “Adams Run” appears to be a false start of the same place name. The signature and place line (“Jersey, Virginia”) are in the same large, shaky hand. The certification was written more than thirty years after the wedding itself; see the covering letter on pages 388–390.
