After the recitation of the Nicene Creed, Bishop Allin called upon Bishop Allison to obey Christ, be faithful to the Scriptures, proclaim the Gospel and fulfill all his other obligations to his diocese and God.
With Bishop Allin sitting and Bishop Allison standing before him in his red and white robes, the verbal investiture began. Bishop Allin held Bishop Allison’s right hand firmly, while investing him with the “temporal and spiritual rights” and responsibilities of the office of bishop of South Carolina.
The carved wooden pastoral staff was handed over by Bishop Temple on behalf of the people and clergy of the Diocese of South Carolina. The two men clasped their right hands together around the staff as Bishop Temple asked that “Christ the Good Shepherd uphold you and sustain you as you carry it in his name.”
Then, with a Bible in his right hand and the newly received pastoral staff in his left, Bishop Allison walked to the cathedra, where the staff was set down before him. The dean of the cathedral, the Very Rev. Lynwood C. Magee, then formally installed the new diocesan bishop in his chair, asking that “the Lord stir up in you the flame of holy charity, and the power of faith that overcomes the world.”
The bishop, following the tradition of apostolic succession, was seated and then received the acclamations of an enthusiastic congregation. The full pews burst forth with applause for the new bishop and a brilliant fanfare was sounded.
Bishop Allison came forward to the center of the chancel, staff in hand, and made his first speech as bishop of the South Carolina Diocese, promising to do good and to distribute the good he found.
The three bishops, Allin, Allison, Temple, were seated at the rear of the chancel, beneath the large cross.
After the ritual washing of Bishop Allison’s hands, the collection was taken and the ceremony of the Holy Communion was begun. Bishop Allison served as celebrant at the Eucharist, carrying out the symbolic offering of the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. While the congregation accepted the sacrament, the choir, under the direction of W. Benjamin Hutto, organist and choirmaster of the Cathedral, performed a series of hymns.
A deacon dismissed the churchgoers: “Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.”
The acolytes returned to their pews and the procession made its way along the center aisle, with Bishop Allison the last to make his way from the cathedral. Organ, brass and tympani performed Eugene Gigout’s “Grand Cheour Dialogue” as the church pews emptied out. Clergy and laity were invited to celebrate with Bishop Allison, his wife and family at the Mark Clark Student Center at The Citadel following the ceremonies.
