CORDES (right column)
The miniatures of Samuel Gaillard and his brother Theodore who were lost at sea were probably painted in England by a William Singleton. They now belong to Louise de B. FitzSimons — Nov. 1958 —
Theodore Gaillard who married Elinor Cordes was a merchant and was owner in Charleston S.C. & planter on Cooper River. Com. House Assoc. 1768, 1769, 1772 (S.C. Gazette) 2nd Prov. Congress 1775 (S.C. Gazette — 3rd, 7th, 1775) (Register Cal. Names of Am. in S.C. — 1945 pg. 14, 17.)
CORDES
Elinor Cordes — who’s portrait is known in the family as “Nellie Cordes” — was born 23rd May 1744. daughter of John Cordes (son of Isaac) and Catherine Cordes (daughter of Thomas). She was married on June 17th 1764 to Theodore Gaillard (son of Theodore Gaillard of Wamba S.C.) and grand son of Joachim Gaillard the emigrant.
John Cordes and his wife Catherine were descendants of Hector Anthoine Cordes who emigrated from France. He died in S.C. in 1712.
According to family tradition the portrait of Nellie Cordes was painted when she was 2 years old. The date of the portrait therefore is 1746. It is supposed to have been painted by Theüs who painted portraits in Charleston S.C. before and after 1740.
The portrait now (1958) is the property of her great, great, great grand son Samuel Gaillard FitzSimons.
Barker
Elinor Cordes Barker — daughter of Henrietta Catherine Gaillard and Joseph Sanford Barker — was known to us as “Aunt Ellinor.” When I was a child Aunt Ellen Porcher used to take me to see her — She was Aunt Ellen Porcher’s aunt & I enjoyed going. for Aunt Ellinor was a cheerful — sprightly old lady — She was nice to children and always had cookies for them — Later on she came to live at Uncle Theodore Barker’s. She was very old then & never left her room. She still sewed and her stitches were so tiny you could hardly see them — She was very active around her room — but she was very neat & had lost her teeth. My memory of her is of a most charming old lady.
When she was 94 she must have dozed in front of the fire & a spark set her clothes on fire. She died from shock. Her sister Frances lived with the Heywards on Cooper river — She lived to be
7599 —Abbey Anne — another sister — married a Mr. Ferguson and their daughter
AI Notes
An album leaf densely covered in handwritten genealogical notes in blue ballpoint pen, arranged in three columns under the headings BARKER, GAILLARD, and CORDES. The Barker column gives the English origin of the family at Ashton, parish of Claverly, and traces it forward to Susan Milliken Barker (Mrs. Christopher FitzSimons) and her children. The Gaillard column begins with Joachim Gaillard of Montpellier and runs down through Theodore Gaillard, Henrietta Catherine Gaillard, Joseph Sanford Barker, and the children of Mr. Sanford Barker (3rd son) and Christina Broughton. The Cordes column gives Elinor Cordes Barker (born 1744) and her marriage to Theodore Gaillard, with a long anecdote about ‘Aunt Ellinor’ from the compiler’s childhood — the compiler’s aunt ‘Aunt Ellen Porcher’ (Ellen Milliken Barker, Mrs. Thomas Porcher) took the writer to visit Aunt Ellinor as a child. Earlier red/orange ink writing is visible beneath the blue ink at the top of the Gaillard column. This page does NOT use the ‘Barlow’ surname variant anywhere — the writer is consistent in using ‘Barker’ throughout. ‘Barlow’ is documented for this family in other archive sources but is a separate marriage-line name, not a spelling variant of Barker.
