Page 3 of the SCHS finding aid for the Gaillard Family papers (collection 1033.00), continuing from page 2. The page completes the item-level inventory in four sub-units:

  • 11/149/3–13 (continued) — the tail of the land/family-document bundle, listing the Daniel Flud / Peter Gaillard land documents (1807–1809), a plat and lease of Thomas Gaillard’s St. John’s Berkeley land, and Peter Gaillard Sr.'s will and funeral directions (1830–1832).
  • 11/149/14–17Peter Gaillard Jr.'s plantation, account, and estate papers (35 items, 1811–1847). The finding aid renders Peter Jr.'s dates here as 1789–1841, which differs from the 1783–1843 range given in the biographical note on page 1 — a discrepancy in the SCHS catalog itself that the present transcription preserves as printed. The papers include cotton-sales receipts (1810–1811), Berkeley-County land deeds (1834, 1839), a 1837 conveyance from Theodore L. Gourdin with an 1839 letter from Gourdin, account books (1826–1834) of cotton sales and household expenses, estate papers (1842–1846), and most importantly a plantation book (1825–1847) that includes lists of enslaved people with registers of births, deaths, and marriages, a statement of cotton crops at The Rocks (1825–1833), and tax returns for the estate of S. Gaillard (1831–1840).
  • 11/149/18Joseph Couturier estate papers (1833–1834), approximately 25 items. Couturier (1778–1833), a Charleston planter, named Peter Gaillard Jr. as executor; the papers include accounts of his and Francis (Dwight) Marion’s estates as administered by Gaillard Jr.
  • 11/149/19–25James Gaillard (1818–1906) papers, approximately 50 items dating 1843–1901. James Gaillard served as secretary of the Pineville Jockey Club, and the bulk of his surviving papers are 1852–1863 records of the club’s operations — bills, receipts, letters concerning membership, expenses, and upkeep. The unit also includes a 1843 trust agreement to him, a 1901 plat of Berkeley County land, and a Gaillard family history note which would be a primary item to consult for any further claim about the family’s pre-Charleston origins.
