Four photographs mounted on an album sheet, captioned in pencil and blue ink.

Upper left — a small black-and-white snapshot of a young girl in a white bonnet, indoors, smiling broadly and holding something (perhaps a bottle).

Nancy — Summerlin St. Orlando

[Summerlin Street, Orlando, was the McEwans’ first Orlando address before 1129 S. Osceola St. (cf. page 215, where baby Jim is also captioned at Summerlin St.). Summerlin is a historic Orlando thoroughfare bordering Thornton Park.]

Upper center — a small uncarded black-and-white snapshot of a small girl in a dress, standing at the base of a palm tree on a sunny lawn; in the background, large live-oak trees draped with Spanish moss and a one-story house. Despite its position above the “Chris (with palm)” caption, the subject is clearly a small girl in a dress — almost certainly Nancy at the same Orlando location as the larger snapshot below.

[Uncaptioned on the page. The setting (palm, oaks, Spanish moss, white house in background) is identical to the larger card-mounted print below, so the two were almost certainly taken on the same visit, with the photographer snapping both children at the foot of the palm.]

Center-right — a larger black-and-white snapshot mounted on white scalloped card. Same palm and house location as the upper-center snapshot, but the small figure at the base of the palm is a young boy in a white shirt and shorts.

Caption in pencil beneath, on two lines (with a struck-out phrase in the middle):

Chris (with palm) — 5 years old — [strikethrough word, possibly “on his 5th [b’day]”] Orlando Fla.

[The strike-through is heavy enough that the original wording is now illegible. The compiler appears to have started writing about Chris’s age in one phrasing and crossed it out in favor of the simpler “5 years old.”]

Lower right — a large tinted color studio portrait of a curly-haired girl, eyes turned slightly toward the viewer, with a pink bow in her hair and a lace collar.

Nancy Fletcher McEwan 19—

AI Notes

An album page with four photographs of two small children of Nancy McEwan (the compiler’s eldest daughter Dee, by her second husband). Layout: upper-left, a black-and-white snapshot of a small girl in a bonnet; upper-center, a small uncarded snapshot of a small girl standing beside a palm tree on a lawn; center-right, a larger black-and-white snapshot mounted on white scalloped card showing a small boy at the same palm-tree location with a house in the background; lower-right, a large tinted color studio portrait of a curly-haired girl. Captions are in pencil and blue ink. The small upper-center snapshot shows Nancy (not Chris) beside the palm — same Spanish-moss-draped tree as in the larger Chris print, presumably the same visit; the card-mounted print is the actual ‘Chris (with palm)’ photo. The McEwans lived briefly at Summerlin Street, Orlando, before their later 1129 S. Osceola St. address (cf. page 215, where baby Jim is also captioned at Summerlin St.).

The caption breaks off at “19—” without completing a year. The portrait style and the child’s apparent age (about 4-5) suggest a date c. 1950-1951.
