Surprises Are All Silver

By DEBBIE ORLANDO

When Bo McEwan planned a surprise 25th wedding anniversary party for Mary Ann recently, Agnes (their maid) was in cohoots [sic] and each detail of the buffet supper was perfect. The Jerry Rosses invited the couple over to their house before going out to dinner. When Bo insisted on going home for a minute there were no cars in evidence to indicate that a few close friends and relatives were on hand, plus members of the wedding party from other parts of Florida.

Taking advantage of a free Saturday morning, Jim phoned his brother, Chris, who is in law school at Washington and Lee, in Lexington, Va.

Chris told Jim to hop on a bus and meet him in Staunton for lunch which he thought he did. After an interminable period of riding, Jim asked his seat companion where they were headed and found that it was in the opposite direction from Staunton, towards Richmond.

He pulled the cord, dismounted in the middle of nowhere and caught a ride back to Charlottesville with a former Hill student. Chris must have wondered what happened to his younger brother, who arrived back in time for the dance and otherwise delightful weekend.

A clipped newspaper article from the Women’s News section of the Orlando Sentinel, page 3-E, Sunday, May 29, 1966, under the byline ‘By DEBBIE ORLANDO.’ Headed ‘Surprises Are All Silver,’ the article reports on the silver (25th) wedding anniversary surprise party Bo McEwan threw for his wife Mary Ann (the compiler Amy Walker’s daughter Mary Ann Walker McEwan) — confirming the date of the 1941 Jacksonville wedding cited elsewhere in the album. The piece is illustrated with two small head-and-shoulders photographs side by side, captioned ‘Mary Ann McEwan’ (left) and ‘Claudia Stainton’ (right). A second item below the main story narrates an episode at the St. Anne’s School spring dance weekend involving the McEwans’ two sons Jim (Hill School) and Chris (Washington and Lee law school) and Jim’s date Margaret Watkins. A ‘Datebook Data’ sidebar at the lower left lists out-of-town family members who came for the party. The wedding-party guest list reads as Bibba and Ray Richardson, Ann Wright and Judson Freeman, Sara Lee and Bill Scheu, Ed and Dottie Gay, and Ann and Peck Walker; other names include the Jerry Rosses, Claudia Stainton, and Staunton, Va. as Chris’s W&L meeting point. This article is significant family-tree evidence — the McEwans’ silver wedding in May 1966 confirms a 1941 wedding date.
