AI Notes
Typescript copy, sixth page of the will of Ann Drayton Perry. Page numbered ‘#6’ at upper right (with ‘793’ in pencil also visible at corner). Continues from p616, picking up mid-sentence the bequest of enslaved persons (Rachael, the wife of Anthony Isaac, plus their children Toby, Juliet Hannah Daniel and Lewis) to son Edward D. Perry for life, with remainder to his intended second wife Maria Ann Mauger during her widowhood, and ultimately to the testator’s grandchildren. Closes with the start of the bequest of two plantations or tracts of land at Horse Savannah in the Parish of Saint Paul, called the Blue House and Old House. Transcribed literally for archival fidelity (long-s spellings ‘ifsue’, ‘afsigns’, ‘expences’, ‘Neverthelefs’ preserved; typist’s punctuation lapses preserved).
Editorial note: this is page 6 of the will of Ann Drayton Perry (1830). Page numbered ‘#6’ in the typescript header, with ‘793’ (probate volume 38 pagination) in pencil at the upper right corner — falling between p616 (page 5, paginated 792) and p618 (page 7, paginated 794). Rachael is the wife of Anthony Isaac, the previously-named enslaved man on p616; “their children” refers to her and Anthony Isaac’s children. The named enslaved persons (Toby, Juliet Hannah Daniel, Lewis) are granted with their mother to Edward D. Perry for life, then to his intended second wife Maria Ann Mauger during her widowhood, then to the testator’s grandchildren — a typical 1830 Lowcountry trust structure. The bequest of the Horse Savannah plantations (the Blue House and Old House) begins in the final sentence and continues onto p618.
