A handwritten letter in dark ink on lined cream paper.
Charleston Oct 22/96
Dear Mother,
My little daughter was born last Saturday, 17th inst. and I have been meaning to write to you ever since. Annie is well and the baby is well,
so thatI feel very thankful. It has been a surprise to me how well and strong Annie is and of course we are both pleased that the baby is a girl. We have no name for her as yet and I have said to Annie that she could name her provided I reserved the right to criticise any name I did not like; of course thatonlyamounts to having a say in the selection
AI Notes
First leaf of a three-page letter (continued on pages 477 and 478) in W. Huger FitzSimons’s flowing cursive hand, written in dark ink on lined cream paper. Dated ‘Charleston / Oct 22/96’ and addressed ‘Dear Mother,’ — the mother is Susan Milliken Barker FitzSimons (1827-1900). Announces the birth of his daughter on Saturday the 17th (17 October 1896), reports that both Annie (his wife, Annie Cain) and the baby are well, and discusses the choice of a name — Annie may name her provided he reserves the right to criticise. Per the family chart on page 271, the only daughter listed for W. Huger FitzSimons + Annie Cain is Marguerite, so this letter is the birth-announcement for Marguerite FitzSimons (b. 17 Oct 1896, later m. Dr. Robert Pringle/Preston, per p271 cluster). Writer’s strike-throughs and revisions preserved (so that, only).
Letter continues on page 477. The newborn daughter — born Saturday, 17 October 1896 — is Marguerite FitzSimons (the only daughter on W. Huger FitzSimons + Annie Cain’s branch in the page-271 family chart). She later married Dr. Robert Pringle (or Preston) per the descendant lines on p271. “Mother” addressed here is Susan Milliken Barker FitzSimons (1827-1900), the writer’s mother; “Annie” is his wife Annie Cain.
