Nov. 10th, 1928

Dear “Chubby”:

Just a short line in order that it may go off by the S.S. President McKinley which ship sails at 4.00 p.m. this day for Seattle arriving there Dec. 3rd.

Had a wonderful trip over only it was very costly as I spent about $200.00 of my own money enroute sightseeing and reciprocating

AI Notes

First sheet of a five-page handwritten letter (pages 447–451) on Manila Hotel stationery. The printed letterhead reads, at upper left, ‘MANAGEMENT / WALTER E. ANTRIM’; at centre top, a circular MANILA HOTEL device with ‘MANILA, P.I.’ beneath; and at upper right ‘CABLE ADDRESS: “MANHOCO” MANILA / ALL TELEGRAPHIC CODES’. The letter is addressed to ‘Chubby’ (a sibling nickname) and dated Nov. 10, 1928. The writer reports the imminent departure of his outgoing mail aboard the S.S. President McKinley, which sails for Seattle that afternoon (arrival Dec. 3), and describes his Pacific crossing as ‘wonderful’ but costly. Signed on page 451 ‘your devoted brother John’ — the same hand as the 1918 Halifax letter (page 446) and the 1948 Hendersonville letter to ‘Ellie’ (pages 517–522); the writer is John McCready FitzSimons, brother of Ellen M. (‘Ellie’) FitzSimons and Louisa FitzSimons. The Manila Hotel manager Walter E. Antrim was the noted hotelier who had managed the Manila Hotel since the early 1920s; his name appears only on the printed letterhead.
