The Rev. Donald A. Fishburne was ordained Priest in a service at St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church in Summerton Friday, December 21, southeast of St. Thomas the Apostle.

The Right Reverend Gray Temple, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina, was Celebrant. Bishop Temple presided at the ordination and at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist which immediately followed.

Rev. Fishburne was named Priest-in-Charge of St. Matthias’ Church, which he had been serving as Deacon-in-Charge since June.

Rev. Fishburne was presented to the Bishop by Henry B. Rickenbaker, Senior Warden; Dr. Thomas Marion Davis, Junior Warden; by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Fishburne of Charleston; by the Rev. R. Michael Jones, Rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter; and by Mrs. Annilee Thornhill Brown, representing the Virginia Theological Seminary.

Other participants were: The Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Jr., Rector of All Saints’ Church, Florence; The Rev. D. Joseph Rhodes, Priest-in-Charge of St. Christopher’s Church, Sumter; The Rev. Edward Meeks, Rector of Christ-St. Paul’s and Trinity churches, Yonges Island; the Rev. S. Woodie Miller of Orangeburg; and the Rev. Marshall Allen of the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, Charleston.

Serving as Lay Readers were Leland W. Kelley, Jr., Carlton E. Elliott, and DuValle C. Elliott. Acolytes were Alexander Richbourg, III; DuValle Elliott, Jr.; T.M. Davis, Jr.; and L. Gilland Frierson.

Special music was offered by the St. Matthias’ Church Choir, under the direction of W. Benjamin Hutto, II, Organist and Choirmaster of the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, Charleston.

Twenty Episcopal clergy, in addition to the chief participants, also took part in the service. Among them were the Rev. John Gilchrist, the Rev. Richard Dority, the Rev. W. Todd Ferneyhough, and the Rev. S. Woodie Miller, all of whom had served St. Matthias’ Church in the past. Also attending were the Rev. William J. Bradbury of Peachtree City, Ga., the Rev. William Davis, Pastor of the Summerton United Methodist Church; the Rev. Don Bolls, Pastor of the Summerton Presbyterian Church; and W. Benjamin Hutto, II, William M. Shand, III, a Theological Seminary.

All of those attending enjoyed a lunch of shrimp, sausage and corn, served in the Parish Hall. The Luncheon was hosted by the Men of the Church, headed by Henry Rickenbaker, The Hon. T. Harvey Beser, and Billy Frierson, and assisted by other men and ladies of the Church.
