AI Notes

Hand-drawn pedigree sketch in blue ink on a small sheet of plain paper, enclosed with the Harriott Stoney Simons letter (sheets at pages 319 and 329) sent to Amy on March 6, 1959. The pencilled note at top left makes the provenance explicit: ‘Sam did this on the back of your letter, I have only copied it. H.S.’ — ‘Sam’ is Samuel Gaillard Stoney (the writer’s brother, Charleston historian and architect), ‘H.S.’ is Harriott Stoney Simons herself. Chart pairs three generations: John Stoney = Elizabeth Porcher Gaillard at top; their children Elizabeth Porcher Stoney (m. Christopher FitzSimons) and Edgar George Stoney (m. Anne O’Bryan); the next generation Catherine FitzSimons (m. Dr. Robert Withers Vaux) and Eliza C. Stoney; and the issue of Catherine and Dr. Vaux — Robert, Robbie, Eddie, and Minnie (m. Whitford) — at the bottom. Lower-left note supplies the modern Whitford-Brecht address in Germantown, Pa., and notes ‘Cleland Vaux is dead.’ ‘O. Bryan’ is the Irish surname O’Bryan; ‘Minnie — married Whitford’ is Minnie Vaux Whitford, mother of Mary Vaux Whitford Brecht; ‘Sam’ is Samuel Gaillard Stoney and ‘H.S.’ is Harriott Stoney Simons (cf. page 329). The chart’s ‘Fitz Simons’ (two words) spelling is preserved in transcription, standardized to ‘FitzSimons’ in metadata.
