My Dear Miss Fitz Simons
It was only a few days ago that I was talking with Mr. Bonsal [uncertain] of the great charm and at- tractiveness of your brother, Mr. S. G. Fitz Simons, and the news of his death a few days later came to me as a great shock. Having so recently myself lost a relative who was also a life long companion and friend, I know how to sympathize with you and your family in your bereavement.

The writer (signed Walter B. Hammond on the closing leaf, page 314) addresses ‘My Dear Miss Fitz Simons’ (Ellen K. FitzSimons) to express sympathy on the recent death of her brother, Mr. S. G. Fitz Simons, having spoken only a few days earlier with a Mr. Bonsal [uncertain reading] of the great charm and attractiveness of the deceased. Hammond mentions a recent personal bereavement of his own and offers heartfelt sympathy. Letter continues onto subsequent scans.
Letter continues on the next scan. The closing leaf at page 314 carries the signature “Walter B. Hammond” and the addressee panel “To Miss Ellen K. FitzSimons / Charleston S.C.”, anchoring the writer and recipient of this letter. The date 1930 (previously read as 1924) is established by the year of Samuel G. FitzSimons’s death recorded on page 312.
