AI Notes
Album page laid out as a hand-drawn family tree for Dr. Christopher FitzSimons (b. 24 Jan 1826; d. 14 May 1860 [pencilled death-year correction; he actually died 1866 in the Moss Grove tornado per p279]) and his wife Susan Milliken Barker (b. 23 June 1827; d. 14 Dec 1900), with their seven numbered children and the next generation written across the page. Three photographs are mounted: upper-left oval portrait of Dr. Christopher FitzSimons (a bearded man, bust); upper-right oval portrait of Susan Milliken FitzSimons (seated, in white cap and dark dress); and a small lower carte-de-visite captioned “SUSAN MILLIKEN BARKER. Wife of Dr. CHRISTOPHER Fitz-Simons” showing her as a younger woman. The chart shows seven children: (1) Christopher (Jr.) “Kit”, (2) Samuel Gaillard, (3) Seaman Sinkler, (4) Theodore Stoney, (5) William Huger, (6) Ellen Milliken (unmarried — the Charleston Library Society librarian), (7) Gaillard Stoney. Child (2) Samuel Gaillard’s wife is Mary Anne Perry. Margarita’s first husband on the lower-left descendant line reads “Margarita Conners — M — Henrich Jr. McKay Alston (1st) / Leonard McKay (2nd)” — uncertain whether these are her two husbands or her two children by the first marriage. Lower-right cluster on William Huger’s branch: “Marguerite — M — Dr. Robert Pringle [or Preston]” with child “Anne — M — Alexander Worth”.
Many of the descendant names and numbered children are written in faded pencil and ink and overlap; the order within branches is the transcriber’s best reading of the chart as inscribed on the album page. The chart is later in date than the parents shown — it includes Marguerite’s marriage to Dr. Robert Pringle/Preston and grandchildren, so was compiled (or updated) well after Susan Milliken Barker’s 1900 death.
This is the compiler’s own grandparental tree. Branch (2) “Samuel Gaillard — M — Mary Anne Perry” lists the compiler Amy Perry FitzSimons (Mrs. James Pickens Walker) as its first child. Dr. Christopher 3rd’s death date is correctly given by the pencilled “1866” correction (he died in the Moss Grove tornado of 17 May 1866); the “May 14” date appears to be a misremembered family tradition.
